Gemini key
The app reads the handwriting with Google's Gemini AI, using your own free key. The key is kept only in this browser, and the photos go straight from here to Google.

- Open Google AI Studio and sign in with your Google account.
- Click Create API key and copy the key.

🔒 Is my key safe?
On the free tier there's little to worry about. Google doesn't charge a free key, so the worst case if someone got hold of it is that they use up your free quota for the day. The key is stored only in this browser on this device, and only ever sent to Google.
Two simple habits:
- Don't share the key or show it in a screenshot (this app only shows its first and last four characters).
- On a shared or borrowed device, press Remove above when you're done.
On the free tier, Google may use what you send to improve its products.
Optional: lock the key to this app
Then a copied key doesn't work anywhere else. Takes a minute:
- Open Google Cloud → Credentials with the same Google account, and click your key.
- Under Application restrictions choose Websites and add
(and, if you also run the app on your own computer,http://127.0.0.1:8000/*). - Under API restrictions choose Restrict key, tick Generative Language API, and Save.
I've switched on billing / I use a paid model
Then a leaked key could cost money, so a bit more care is worth it:
- Lock the key to this app (see above). With billing on, this is the important one.
- Set a budget with e-mail alerts in Google Cloud (Billing → Budgets & alerts), so unexpected use can't go unnoticed.
- If you think the key has leaked, delete it in Google AI Studio, create a new one and paste it here.
Lichess
Log in to add games straight into your Lichess studies. "Open in Lichess" works without it.
